About the Commissioner of Public Lands:
The State Land Commissioner’s responsibilities were enacted after New Mexico became a state, and the federal government allocated 13 million acres of subsurface and surface lands with a mandate to generate revenue for public schools and public institutions. Historically, the Land Commissioner virtually has unfettered authority to manage the billions of dollars of the state’s natural resources. Garrett VeneKlasen’s vision works to establish permanent oversight, accountability and transparency measures to end the culture of backroom deals in the Land Office.
VeneKlasen’s vision advocates for increased funding for public education, including responsibly raising the annual distribution of the $22.3 billion Land Grant Permanent Fund for Pre-K through 12.
Currently, most of the money for New Mexico comes from oil and gas revenue. The Land Commissioner can bring in new money by working to attract investors for commercial leases using renewable energies and increase funding for all public programs.
VeneKlasen wants to transform New Mexico’s economy from a consumptive model to a sustainable model. His vision is to exponentially increase job-generating renewable energy production on state lands and boost rural economies by amplifying access and use of public lands for outdoor recreation.
These lands are part of our regional watershed and protecting this watershed is of critical importance. VeneKlasen’s extensive experience in the natural resource planning and policy realm is a crucial component for progressive management of the remaining 9 million acres of surface and 13 million acres of subsurface.
Garrett VeneKlasen is a capable experienced leader with the skills to guide New Mexico into a more diversified and viable future! Visit his website for an in-depth look at his platform: www.gvk4nm.com
Please help us prepare by letting us know if you think you can attend! We look forward to seeing you there!
